A trailblazer in international journalism and a powerful female voice on the global stage, Kateryna Lisunova became the first Ukrainian resident correspondent at the United Nations and the only journalist consistently covering Russia’s war against Ukraine at the U.S. Congress. Her bold, uncompromising questions to diplomats, lawmakers, and presidents have helped keep the growing threats of autocracies, dictatorship, and disinformation at the forefront of international dialogue.
From 2017 to 2021 her work at the UN opened new doors for Ukrainian media on the world stage. Because of her efforts, more journalists have learned how to gain UN resident status, join the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA), and apply for fellowships from the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation for Journalism.
Her series on the history of the Ukrainian feminist movement—from the 19th century until today—highlights the founding of women’s organizations in Ukraine, their resilience during Soviet rule, their presence at the UN, and the growth of the Ukrainian women’s movement in the U.S. and abroad. These stories provide a deeper understanding of the historical struggles and triumphs of Ukrainian women.
On January 6, 2021, Kateryna was one of the few journalists reporting live from the insurrection of the U.S. Capitol.
From 2021 to 2025, she has continued her vital mission in the U.S. Congress, reporting on key American lawmakers' stances on the largest war in Europe since WWII. She has delivered in-depth, bipartisan and bicameral coverage, including interviews with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, House Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. Even as media priorities shift, Kateryna has remained committed to spotlighting Russian aggression, international cooperation, and the unity of democratic nations.
Her interviews and reporting have frequently broken news in both Ukrainian and international outlets. Throughout her career, Kateryna has worked with BBC, VOA, Jewish international network JN1, Priamyi TV, Radio Hit-FM, LB.ua, Liga.net, and others. Several of her works have been included in the Harvard College Library, specifically in the Archives of the Americas, Europe, and Oceania Division (AEOD). Kateryna regularly gives lectures to students at Ukrainian universities.
As a multimedia journalist, Kateryna independently handles everything from filming and editing to reporting and writing—making her a standout example of talent, excellence and versatility of women in the media.
“As a journalist, a woman, and a Ukrainian, I face many challenges. Although, Ukrainian women in general are among those who need the most support right now. But if you’re seeking strength yourself, start by supporting others—because what you give to the world often finds its way back to you.
When things get tough, I hold on to a few core values: believe in God, be kind, support others, and always stand up for the truth. Truth, justice, and good people are worth fighting for.
This recognition and the award gives me renewed strength to keep pushing forward—and to stand alongside other women during these dark and trying times in modern history.“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by Women’s Voice in Action—not just as a journalist, but as a woman in this profession,»- Kateryna Lisunova
We are sincerely grateful for her support of The Women’s Voice in Action
